Today marks the start of teacher appreciation week and it got me thinking about all the influential teachers I have had in my life. So, in celebration of teacher appreciation week I wanted to say THANK YOU to some of my favorite teachers! First, I want to start by thanking my first teachers, my parents. My parents, Amy & Wilson Tsu, are immigrants from Hong Kong, both of my parents immigrated to the states when they were 17 and 18. They both came from very different backgrounds, but worked hard and have not only taught me so many important life lessons, loved and supported me through many challenges, but have also made so many sacrifices so that I could grow up here in America and have the opportunity to pursue my own happiness. Words and actions could never truly express the gratitude I have for my first and life-long teachers, but an enormous thank you to my parents, to whom I have so much gratitude. Additionally, a HUGE SHOUTOUT to my favorite teacher growing up, who was actually my 6th grade teacher (how funny, right!?), Mr. Gage Smith. Mr. Smith was a very funny man. He was often dieting through the school year, or at least his wife at the time was putting him on a diet. He would groan to us, "Do you want me to be fat and jolly, or mean and lean?!" I would reply, "FAT AND JOLLY!" (Of course!) School was traditionally worksheets back then, but I remember that Mr. Smith would make school come alive for me, he was a funny guy and always making jokes. He and his fellow teacher friend both ran token economy systems in their classrooms and would allow us to buy things at auction (something I have typically done until this year because of PHAs Voyager Bucks). Once I bought lunch with a teacher, and I'm old enough to where I got in a car with him, Mr. Hanford, and the student from Mr. Hansford class who bought lunch with a teacher, and went off to Port of Subs for a lunch. I remember I ordered a foot long sub and he didn't think I could eat it. I just thought, he doesn't know that I'm a TSU, and we Tsus eat. LOL. I ate the entire thing and he was super impressed. I think more than anything, Mr. Smith inspired me to become a teacher and taught me the meaning of the quote: While I have many favorite teachers, some of whom I've worked with, some of whom I wish I had had, and others that I had the pleasure of being taught by, my favorite teachers, especially as a teacher, have been my students' first teachers, YOU, their parents! So I wanted to start teacher appreciation week off by saying thank you for being your child's first and life-long teacher! Your role is crucial in their every aspect of development, as their sleep, nutrition, exercise habits, and academic success stem from all that you do at home. So thank you for helping them building healthy eating habits and get enough sleep for their growing bodies (They need 9-12 hours of sleep. Read more here.), for encouraging them to have a growth mindset and persevere, for helping give them a place to do homework and develop healthy habits at home, and for loving them and giving them what they need so they can come to school ready to learn. Their success in all aspects are life are so important to me and that's why I love it here at PHA; we have a great focus on the whole child, as outlined in the Voyager Code:
There is so much focus on what's going wrong in the world, but we need to recognize what's going right in our homes and continue to build the connections that help grow a more wonderful and brighter tomorrow. So thank you, thank you for being your child's first teacher and for helping them learn and grow! No matter where you are in life, it's never too late to start new traditions and healthy habits, so if you feel like you want to switch things up, but not sure where to start, feel free to ask me for any help, resources, or just want to talk about your student. Thank you for being a part of our Ohana! Happy Teacher Appreciation Week! LOL.
